Clay Selection and Preparation

The high-quality natural clay we use comes from trusted local suppliers known for its purity and workability. The clay is carefully screened to remove all impurities and mixed with water to the desired consistency before use. The clay is then kneaded repeatedly to ensure that there are no air bubbles and it is ready for molding. This process involves rolling, folding and pressing the clay until it becomes smooth and uniform, a perfect mixture.

Hand Pulling (Throwing)

The artist applies a lump of clay to the potter’s wheel and starts turning the machine slowly. Wet hands are used to scoop the mass of clay to the center of the turntable and then open it little by little to create the base of the piece. As the wheel turns, the artisan shapes and adjusts the shape with their hands (and sometimes tools), modifying thickness and curves until the desired design is achieved. This process requires careful control of pressure and speed to ensure that the piece is symmetrical and even.

Finishing and Drying

When the work is taken off the wheel, it is carefully trimmed to smooth out the edges and remove excess clay. This step involves smoothing out any imperfections and making sure each piece is balanced and level. The ceramic work is then left to dry slowly in a controlled atmosphere after it has been trimmed. This is achievable within a period of a few days, depending on the size and thickness of the ceramic. Proper drying prevents cracking and makes the piece hard and set to proceed to the next level in the production process.

Bisque Firing

The semi-dry ceramic is placed in a kiln and fired at a low temperature (around 1000°C) to harden it. This process, called bisque firing, removes any remaining moisture from the clay, preparing it for glazing.

Glazing

After bisque firing, the ceramic piece is ready to be glazed. Handmade glazes enhance the natural beauty of the clay and add depth to the finished piece, and are applied using various techniques such as dipping, brushing or sponging. Reactive glazes change color during firing and can also be used to create interesting and unexpected surfaces. Glazes must be dry before final firing.

Glaze Firing

The glazed ceramic piece is returned to the kiln and fired at a higher temperature (approximately 1200-1300°C). During this process, the glaze melts and fuses with the clay, creating the final texture and color. The kiln is then slowly cooled to prevent cracking and ensure the ceramic piece retains its shape and integrity.

Quality Assurance and Packaging

Each ceramic piece is inspected for imperfections, ensuring only flawless pieces make it to the customer. This includes checking for cracks, bubbles, or uneven glazing. The finished ceramic is carefully packaged using environmentally friendly materials to protect its integrity and highlight its handcrafted nature. This may include padded boxes, brackets, or custom packaging solutions.
